Tapas Biswas is a West-Bengal based sculptor. As an artist, Tapas’s artistic practice is predominantly centered around the architecture of spaces and the imaginations, perceptions and subjectivity to different forms of landscapes. As an artist, Tapas primarily works with Bronze and Brass to materialize his artistic productions. There are very specific, challenging and interesting vocabularies, Biswas has created through his practice since the past several years, which adds a very special dimension to the history of casting and sculpting in the Indian subcontinent. Also in many ways, Biswas’s approach towards his sculpture blurs various lines within the High Art and generate a discursive space to access and understand the works with the context of Art after independence in India. Tapas works with various subject maters, artistic choices and strategies of experimentation in his sculptural productions. The recent boy of works from the exhibition is again special ones from usually what Tapas’s artistic vocabulary is known for. Through this series of works, Tapas attempts to create a sense transformative behavioural consciousness of our modern cities. Also the choice of the material, Brass refers back to the ancient cities, their sense of perspective and the notion of habitation from different times. With both of these concerns, the works are an outcome to bridge the history into the present, further imaginations, speculations for the future and the sense of sculptural and architectural vocabulary to regenerate different levels of symbolical values.
