Vasudha Thozhur

(b. 1956, Mysore)

Vasudha Thozhur is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is primarily rooted in painting. She completed her Diploma in Painting from the College of Arts and Crafts, Madras (1972), and Post-Diploma in Painting from the Croydon School of Art and Design, UK, (1982).

Thozhur’s practice engages with painting as a dynamic language, constantly evolving through a dialogue with shifting contingencies and emotional depth. Her work challenges the notion of a singular artistic identity, allowing for a dissolution of the 'signature' style in favour of a more fluid and responsive approach. Central to her practice is the reclaiming of lost dimensions of feeling, resisting the fragmentation brought on by commodification and control. This evolving vocabulary drives her art into new, unexplored directions, redefining the boundaries of authorship and expression.

She is a founding faculty member of the Department of Art, Media, and Performance at Shiv Nadar University, Dadri, where she curated ‘Art and the Field: Context and Materiality’ (2024), a compilation of student works from the past decade. Her institutional involvement extends to lecturing, teaching, and serving on juries at MS University Baroda, NID Ahmedabad, and IICD Jaipur. She received two grants from the India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore, supporting her collaboration with Himmat, an activist organisation in Vatva, Ahmedabad (2002-07). This collaboration led to the exhibition, ‘Beyond Pain: An Afterlife’, Sakshi Gallery and Project 88, Mumbai (2013), and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (2015). Her publication, ‘Vasudha Thozhur/Diaries, Projects, Pedagogy 1998–2018’, was the first in the Art Documents series, published by Tulika Books with the Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation in 2021.

Thozhur lives and works in Noida, India.
